Japanese Comfort Food

March 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$32

This meal is a lot of really comforting Japanese dishes, that I can’t do at the normal plated dinners. Several of these dishes are best right when they are made, and I’ll be making them all throughout the dinner. Expect a smorgasbord of soulful Japanese comfort food, followed by an elegant dessert.  I learned most of these from my former chef Takashi Saito at Izakaya Yuzuki, when he would make variations of them for staff meal.
Japanese food is so much more than sushi, and this is a wonderful meal to have as example.

The meal is 5 courses, and is an all-inclusive (no tax, no tip!) $32.  If you are interested in making reservations, you can click here.

That said, here’s the menu for the evening:

Soba Noodles with MIso Dipping Sauce
We’ll serve chilled soba noodles ‘zaru soba’ style, with a miso-seasoned tsuyu dipping broth, and thin cut scallions.

Pickles
We’ll serve daikon pickles with pirikara (spicy cucumbers), and soy pickled wakame.

Otonomiyaki
Otonomiyaki translates to ‘as you wish,’ and we will be making you wonderful, whimsical, Japanese style pancakes throughout the evening. May contain pickled shiitakes, maitake mushrooms, hon shimeji, scallions, Tokyo cabbage, heirloom carrots, Thai chiles, pickled turnips, or sauerkraut. We’ll keep them coming…

The Vegan ‘Oyakadon’
‘Oyakadon’ is a wonderfully comforting Japanese dish that unfortunately uses chicken, and eggs. The name literally translates to ‘mother and daughter.’
In spite of the morbid reference, it is a fantastic dish, which can be veganized with all the soul of the original, and served over rice.
We’ll use confit trumpet mushrooms and grilled oyster mushrooms in place of chicken, and our signature vegan egg recipe with a vegan dashi will bind it all together.
A classic Japanese comfort dish.

Soymilk Panna Cotta with Plums and Shiso
A vanilla enriched soymilk panna cotta topped with plums and shiso.

I’m looking forward to this!  Once again, if you’d like to attend the dinner, you can make reservations here.

I‘m very excited for this dinner, and hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

-Kevin
